Dr. Segal received a B.S. degree in Biology from MIT in 1984. As an undergraduate he did research in the laboratory of Dr. Monty Krieger studying the alteration in the glycosylation pattern of a cell line defective in LDL receptor endocytosis. After graduating from MIT, Dr. Segal was accepted into the MSTP M.D./Ph.D. training program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School.

Dr. Segal's research focuses on the mechanisms of the increased cardiovascular disease in patients with diabetes, chronic kidney disease, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and women who have preeclampsia or preterm delivery. His hypothesis is that a key determinate of whether an individual will develop chronic kidney disease or atherosclerosis is the ability of the individual's endothelium to tolerate their level of blood pressure, glycemia, or other stressors to the endothelium.

Dr. Allen obtained PhD in Medicine in 1978. For many years he was treated patients with chronic internal diseases, including various kidney problems: nephritis, nephrosis, chronic kidney failure and kidney stones, developing diets for them. Later Dr Allen headed health clinic for the treatment of chronic internal conditions. Tong Wang completed her M.D. and clinical trainings at Beijing University, School of Medicine in China. She then spent two postdoctoral training periods in the United States, first at the University of Illinois at Chicago and later at Yale University School of Medicine (with Dr. Gerhard Giebisch). Currently, she is a full Professor, Director of the Small Animal Physiology Core in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology and is co-Director of the Renal Physiology Core in the George M O'Brien Kidney Center at Yale University. Riitta Lassila has completed her MD in 1983 from Helsinki University, PhD in 1989, and postdoctoral studies at Mount Sinai University School of Medicine in N.Y. She is an internist and the Head of Coagulation Disorders Unit in Helsinki University Hospital since 2000 and Professor of Coagulation Medicine in Helsinki University since 2013. She has published more than 220 papers in peer-reviewed journals and has served as editor in Thrombosis Research and editorial board member of Haemophilia. She is the secretary of European Association of Haemophilia and Allied Disorders and steering committee member of EUHANET and EUHASS. She is CSO in Aplagon Oy developing APACs as pharamceutical entities.

In 1987 Dr. Nahman joined the faculty at Ohio State after completing his fellowship at the same institution. In 2004 he became director of the Nephrology division of the University of Florida Jacksonville. In 2010 he joined the Nephrology division at the Medical College of Georgia, where he has directed the Department of Medicine Translational Research Program since 2013, leads a USRDS data mining group, and is PI of a basic research lab studying the tolerogenic properties of the enzyme IDO. In 2017, he became Co-chair of the American Society of Nephrology In-training exam question writing group.

Dr. Zhen Su has completed her MD at the age of 25 years from Wenzhou Medical University and has completed her PhD from The Second Military Medical University and postdoctoral studies from Emory University School of Medicine. Waldo Concepcion, MD, FACS, is a Professor of Pediatric Nephrology and Chief of Clinical Transplantation at Stanford University and Chief of Pediatric Kidney Transplantation at Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford. He graduated Medical School from Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara, Mexico. He then completed his General Surgery Residence at Loma Linda University Medical Center and his Transplantation Surgery Fellowship at University of Pittsburgh under the mentorship of Dr. Thomas Starzl, world leader in the field of transplantation. He is a member of the original team that developed the liver transplant program at California Pacific Medical Center, where he practiced as a transplant surgeon from 1988 to 1994 and is an expert in the field of hepatobiliary and portal hypertension surgery. He and his team moved to Stanford University in 1994. In 1996, he was named director of the Transplantation Institute at Loma Linda University Medical Center where he founded the pediatric liver program and served as Director over the multi-organ transplant program. In 2005, Dr. Concepcion returned to Stanford University to become the new Chief of Clinical Transplantation and Chief of Pediatric Kidney Transplantation at Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital continuing in the tradition of one of the best kidney transplant programs in the world. He has published over 100 articles and book chapters in the scientific literature and remains active in clinical research projects.

Maria Hernandez-Fuentes studied Medicine at Universidad Complutense and then completed PhD in Immunology at Universidad de Alcalá, both in Madrid, Spain. She then moved to the UK, Imperial College London, working on alloimmune responses. In 2005, the research group moved to King’s College London and since then she led the biomarker research group of the MRC Centre for Transplantation. She has a long standing interest in understanding and quantifying alloimmune responses and immune monitoring in kidney transplantation; particularly looking at obtaining evidence of tolerance.

Dr. David Tovbin has completed his MD at the Hebrew University School of Medicine, Jerusalem, Israel and his nephrology fellowship at Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, Tx, USA. He is currently Head of Nephrology at Emek Medical Center, Afula, Israel and assistant clinical professor at Faculty of Health Sciences, Technion, Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel. For the last 7 years Dr Tovbin serves as the head of the Hemodialysis Forum of the Israeli Society of Nephrology and Hypertension.

Josep M. Campistol is currently the General Director of the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, Spain, and former Medical Director of the same hospital as well as Director of the Clinical Institute of Nephrology and Urology (ICNU). He is also Professor of Medicine at the Nephrology Department of the University of Barcelona. He received his medical degree from the University of Barcelona in 1983, and completed his residency in internal medicine and, subsequently, his fellowship in renal medicine at the Hospital Clinic of the same institution. Following his training as a fellow in renal medicine at the University of Barcelona, Prof. Campistol continued his clinical work in renal transplantation within the Renal Transplant Unit at the Hospital Clinic. During this period, he also developed research interests into the pathogenesis of dialysis-related amyloidosis, and undertook a visiting Fulbright Scholarship at Boston University School of Medicine in Boston, MA, USA (1991– 1992). His doctoral thesis (1990) was based on the ‘Pathogenesis of dialysis-amyloidosis and the role of lymphocytes on beta-2-microglobulin synthesis and dialysis membranes’. Prof. Campistol has published more than 700 experimental and clinical papers in international peer-reviewed journals. Tetsuhiro Tanaka is a current employee at the Division of Nephrology and Endocrinology, the University of Tokyo School of Medicine.He graduated from the University of Tokyo School of Medicine in 1997 and obtained his PhD degree at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Medicine in 2005. He received the Young Investigator Award of the Japanese Society of Nephrology in 2014. Lavinia-Oltița Brătescu completed her Graduation at University of Medicine and Pharmacy from Timisoara, in Romania. From 2007, she worked as a Nephrologist at Sf. Pantelimon International Healthcare Systems Nephrology and Dialysis Medical Center, in Bucharest. From 2012, she became the Chief Physician of the same clinic. From January 2016, Dr. Lavinia-Oltița Brătescu is Chief Physician at Diaverum Morarilor Nephrology and Medical Center in Bucharest, Romania. She completed her PhD in November 2013. Her PhD thesis entitled “The role of iron and hepcidin in pathogenesis of anemia on hemodialysis patients”. For the first time in a study (published in Journal of Renal Nutrition), hepcidin-25 was measured using a commercial competitive ELISA method. Dr. Abouchacra completed her Residency Training Program in Internal Medicine at University of Toronto, Canada and obtained her Canadian (F.R.C.P.) and American Boards (F.A.C.P.) in Internal Medicine in 1990. Sami has been trained at St Georges’ Hospital Medical School in London. He completed his basic surgical training in Yorkshire. Having a curious mind and an academic interest, he undertook a research fellowship at the Bristol Urological Institute with world experts in the field of lower urinary dysfunction, incontinence and urodynamics. Sami has gained broad experience in General Urology by joining the Southwest of England Specialist Registrar higher surgical training program. Sami was then appointed as a clinical instructor in Urology in the United State of America (USA). During a busy year at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre, Cleveland Clinic and the Arthur Smith Institute of Urology in New York, he developed special expertise in all aspects of Endourology treating all types of urinary stones (with laser, keyhole surgery and shockwave lithotripsy) as well as endoscopic treatment of upper tract urothelial kidney cancer. He was also trained in advanced urology techniques including laparoscopic and robotic surgery to treat kidney and prostate cancer. Sami had formal training as an expert witness. He has admitting rights to the Sprie Cambridge Lea, Cambridge Nuffield and Melberry Huntington hospitals. Being organised and a team player led Sami to take on several management and leadership roles. He is currently the UK board member for the International Young Urologist Association (IYUA), the local champion of the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) for Cambridge University Sami has acted as the UK trainees’ representative on the board of the European Society of Residents in Urology (ESRU) as well as the Senior Urology Registrars Group (SURG) representative on the Andrology executive committee for BAUS, a member of the International Continence Society Ethics Committee and a trainees’ representative for the British Medical Association (BMA) In his practice, Sami focuses on safe patients’ journey and ensures that high quality healthcare remains his main priority at all times. Rober Beelen has completed his PhD cum laude at the age of 30 years from VUmc. After a post-doc as special research fellow in Immunology at St Jude Childrens research Hospital (Memphis, TN, USA) he became a staff member at MCBI Vumc. He was appointed as full professor in cell biology in 2003 and has published more than 250 papers in reputed journals, half of them in the field of PD and was heavily funded by the Dutch Kidney Foundation. In 2011 he got a Marie Curie grant on EuTRiPD (European Training and Research in Peritoneal Dialysis) for 12 PhD students all-over Europe with academic, public and private partners resulting in new biomarkers and new clinical studies for patients on PD

Dr. Golper has been practicing nephrology since 1978, and since 1999 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. His career has been committed to the care of dialysis patients and the study of dialysis sciences. He is the author of 250 publications and has trained many other academic nephrologists. He is a Dialysis Editor for Up To Date.He has held positions on the Board of Directors of the RPA and AAKP, served as the PD Adequacy Work Group Chair for the first two versions of KDOQI, and remains on the Work Group. He led the Network 9 Peritonitis and Catheter Survival Study and has served on the ISPD Ad Hoc Committee for Peritonitis for many iterations of its guidelines. His interests remain in the field of dialysis and the administrative aspects of nephrology practice.

Dr Xiong Z. Ruan leads a research laboratory in UCL Centre for Nephrology which is one of the biggest renal-oriented lipid research laboratories in the world, and also act as the Director and Professor of Centre for Nephrology in Shenzhen University and the Joint Centre for Lipid Research in UCL-Chongqing Medical University. He received his Msc in Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) in 1994 and PhD from University College London (UCL) in 1999. He is the Vice-President of Chinese Society of Renal Physiology and Associate Editor for BMC Nephrology. His major goal has been to develop an academic research programme cross UK and China that i) investigates the mechanisms of inflammatory stress accompanying with chronic kidney diseases in lipid trafficking control and ii) address clinical problems of lipid mediated tissue injuries associated with kidney disease ('Cardio Kidney Diabetes'). Michelle James has completed her Masters in Science in Nursing at the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. She practiced as a bedside nurse on the Solid Organ Transplant unit at the Mayo Clinic for four years before moving to the University of Minnesota Health, where she held the role of Solid Organ Transplant Clinical Nurse Specialist for 11 years, before moving into the role of Clinical Director of Transplant Services, in which she has worked for the last 2 years. Dr. Rula Abdulrahman graduated from the University of Baghdad, School of Medicine at the age of 23. Pursued an expansive medical career and research overseas, currently a PGY2 Internal Medicine resident at St. John`s Episcopal Hospital in Farrockaway New York. Dr. Abdulrahman worked as case manager and clinical supervisor in the Italian Red Cross to help the war victims in the middle east in 2003. Dr. Abdulrahman currently following a path of clinical research with multiple abstracts and case presentations while serving as a resident physician.

Vladimirs Strazdins graduated from Riga Medical Institute in 1977 (now called Riga Stradins University). He served for two years as an Army Medical Officer and started to work in University Hospital for Children in Riga in 1983. He is a member of European Pediatric Dialysis Working Group under ESPN from 2004 till 2012, with published European Guidelines on Pediatric Dialysis. Thomas Ryzlewicz has completed his PhD from Free University in Berlin (West). He started dialysis treatment in 1974. In between 2 years in the Physiologic Institute (Berlin-West, theme acid-base status). In1978, he published two papers in Kidney International (co-working with H Hampl) concerning the cardio-vascular behavior during dialysis monitored by left-heart catheter. In 1978, he worked on the development of a rough protoype for bicarbonate dialysis in order to study the amount of acidification. In 1985, he was a Consultant at the Nephrologic Clinic in Regensburg (Bavaria, Germany). He was a Senior Consultant in 1992 (dialysis centre in Ebersberg, near Munich, Germany). He is responsible for handling of many prototypes of dialysis supply systems, e.g., prototypes of hemofiltration (1978) and of the real (2-step) online-hemofiltration (1983-85). He worked on the development of an own bloodline with minimal contact between blood & air in order to reduce the sheer-stress in single fibre capillary (big EPO dosage reduction, product “Oxyless-Line”) which obtained EU patent, US patent, PEMA audit from London, and was published by Ian Macdougal (King’s College, London)

Bruce Hendry is President of the UK Renal Association and Emeritus Professor of Renal Medicine at King's College London.
